Why I Became Involved: I loved the idea of being involved in a sport that didn't expect women to fit into a mold. The kinds of women who are drawn to derby are a special breed, and I wanted to be part of that strong, independent-minded, dysfunctional family.
Why I Skate: To stay in shape, to be a part of something that makes me want to be better, to make friends all over the country and knock them down.
Embarrasing Moment: Skating against Cape Fear at Dorton in May 2010, I skated out of bounds. Waaaay out of bounds. Like, going out to the fairgrounds for a corn dog out of bounds. As our head of stats put it in his post-game report, "Riva Derci set a new standard for skating out of bounds when she skated off the rink, through the ref lane, past the penalty box, behind the opposing team's bench, and it looked for a moment like it was going to be up the ramp and clear out of Dorton. When she commits to a hit, she commits fully!"
Favorite Fresh Meat Moment: First time I ever put someone on the floor.
Favorite Derby Memory: The championship game of 2009 regionals: Philly vs. Gotham. Seeing those two teams match each other play for play in Dorton Arena was beyond exciting. I challenge anyone to watch that game and say that roller derby is not a legitimate sport.
Likes: Tattoos, booty blocks, constructive feedback
Dislikes: Smoking, tripping, negativity
Bad Habit: Going out of bounds when I block.
Derby Heroes: Eva Lye (my first derby hero back when I was just a fan--now I get to play with her!), Celia Fate (CRG's founder--need I say more?), Deviled Legs (a great skater and an even greater woman), and my derby wife, Elektra Q. Tion.
Inspiration For Name: It's a play on "arrivederci", Italian for "goodbye." It's what I'll be saying to you when I knock you out of bounds.
Food Before A Bout: Usually a peanut butter sandwich and a banana.
Theme Song: So Long, Farewell (duh)
