Why I Became Involved: I was intrigued at first. Derby offered the possibility of being this punk rock sport – somewhat theatrical, but also athletic and aggressive. While I’ve always been competitive, I had never really gravitated to any women’s sport before. But right away derby seemed to fit me in so many ways – the DIY aesthetic, the aggressive contact sport, the camaraderie, the crazy alter-ego of my derby name, the costumes and “show” of it all. And mostly, because skating didn’t seem like work to me – it was just fun.
Why I Skate: I skate for exercise. I skate because it’s the only exercise I’ve found that didn’t feel like exercise. I skate because it makes me happy. I skate to relieve the tension of a long day at work. I skate to see if I can eventually beat 5 minutes on my 20 lap time. I skate so that I can sprint faster, so that I can hit harder, so that I can win. I skate so that next year I can win “Most Bootylicious.” There are so many reasons that I skate. But mostly I skate because I can’t not skate. It’s too fun.
Embarrasing Moment: Every time I fall.
Favorite Fresh Meat Moment: I wasn’t a freshmeat in the traditional sense – when I was new, we were all new and didn’t know what we were doing. The league had just started and we just sort of figured it out as we went along with a lot of guidance from founder Celia Fate. But the May2004 trip to visit the TexasRollergirls was really inspirational. They showed us some great hospitality and some great derby. And along the way helped us to see how we could go about doing this thing called roller derby when we got home.
Favorite Derby Memory: Sep2006, first game at Dorton arena against Sin city Rollergirls (Las Vegas, NV) - two Carolina players are in the box, and Betty Rumble and I are the remaining pack, while Roxy Rockett is jamming. Betty and I look at each other, nod, and then manage to stop the Sin City jammer and Roxy Rockett gets lead. It was a great moment where everything just fell into place.
